Burnside House is a new two-storey residence carefully composed in response to its steeply sloping site. Rather than imposing a singular platform onto the land, the home is arranged across a series of stepped split levels, allowing the form to follow the natural fall. A sunken lounge anchors the primary living zone, creating spatial richness while maintaining an intimate connection to the ground plane.
Although the home extends to a second storey, the street presence remains intentionally restrained. Through considered manipulation of levels and rooflines, the upper floor reads as minimal and recessive, ensuring the dwelling sits comfortably within its leafy Burnside context.
A restrained material palette reinforces the architectural clarity, allowing landscape and light to take precedence. Internal spaces are organised around a central courtyard, drawing greenery deep into the plan and ensuring a constant visual and physical connection to nature. Careful orientation balances solar access, privacy and outlook, while the stepped planning minimises the need for significant retaining walls. The result is a home that touches the site lightly - where, despite the slope, every space feels grounded and connected to the landscape.
